Dundee - the City of Discovery!
Moored at Discovery Point is the
famous sailing ship "Discovery", built in Dundee in 1901 and
recovered from the frozen wastes of Antarctica following the heroic but
ill-fated efforts of Captain Robert Scott and Ernest Shackleton to reach the South Pole.
Restored
and displayed not far from the Bruce Hotel, on the Tay Estuary where she was built
- the last wooden three-masted sailing ship to be built in the British Isles - she has
been adopted by the city as the Spirit of Dundee. A brief entry in Wikipedia
gives details, including continual discovery research at the University
of Dundee and the associated Ninewells
Teaching Hospital, both growing in stature.
Dundee is an ideal base from which to discover Scotland, including the home
of golf at St.
Andrews and Gleneagles,
the bare beauty of the Scottish Highlands, visit Glamis
Castle - or take an easy trip south to the great City of Edinburgh
